How can Blockchain change my Business?
As both a frequent speaker on Blockchain and related topics, I spend a lot of time discussing a common conversation topic – “How can Blockchain help my business?”
This topic comes up from organizations of all sizes, and frequently not just from organizations that are new to Blockchain, but also from businesses that are actively engaged in Blockchain implementation projects as they continue to look for uses of the technology beyond the scope of what their immediate project is.
“This is one of the main reasons why we love doing what we do.“
Having these conversations, working through what Blockchain is, how they’re thinking (or actually) using it, and what the potential is for business is incredibly revealing about how businesses are approaching the Blockchain digital transformation.
Often in these conversations there is no canned or right answer as the potential and possibilities are huge. As a result we spend a fair amount of time discussing goals (both near and far), objectives and requirements to make sure that both the proposed technology and expectations are a fit. Often if we’re having this conversation there is already a scoped project in mind, however we continue to welcome new businesses engagement exploring the potential for the first time – often times without a specific (immediate) use or project in mind. In the case of the former, we discuss and review optimization, performance, extensibilty and scale, however in cases of the later, we frequently use a white-board to start the conversation, put topics/questions/concerns on it and build a ‘parking lot’ (backlog) of questions and issues. We’ll typically always draw a small block in the top left of the white-board, name it our ‘Genesis Block’ and grow it from there, just like a Blockchain. I personally like to take the conversation topics on the board, bundle them as ‘transactions’ and build a “Blockchain Learning Chain” from our real-time conversations. It becomes a sort of learning-path, and a real-life example of Blockchain – using the very examples from the workshop – resulting in both a fundamental understanding of Blockchain, as well as addressing a variety of questions and issues, typically both business and techical.
We offer these workshops onsite and interested parties can have up to 12 people in the room. They are typically a full day (however half day is available) and are designed to fully enable business (versus a technical workshop, also available) to learn about Blockchain and Digital Transformation.

The examples below are just some of what we use to form a ‘check-list’ of points to discuss and address – both with regard to current and planned (i.e. potential) usage:
o Asset Management (also known as Colored Coins)
o Loyalty Points
o Product/Platform usage (Utility)
o Financial Services
o Logistics/Supply Chain
There is a lot more, and each one of the topics has a lot of options, however the lesson from this is that it’s not the technology (it never really is). Instead, it’s about the technologies ability to address inefficient or non-existent business processes, identifying these areas and the proper implementation and customization of a solution to meet those needs.
